Here is a handy guide to help you interpret the different models of this machine.
RapidTrak
Arien RapidTrak snow blowers provide traction. These snow blowers are perfect for clearing snow off of a hill or steep driveway. RapidTrak models are engineered with an adjustable tracked or wheeled machine. Users can switch between tracked or wheeled settings in seconds. The RapidTrak maintains traction on slippery surfaces and while going against high piles of snow. The three RapidTrak models are the Professional 28 Hydro, the Platinum 28 SHO, and the Professional 32 Hydro.
Professional
The Professional series is the top-of-the-line snow blowers that are perfect for commercial or heavy-duty residential use. These machines have higher housing heights than other models that allow the user to swallow deep snowdrifts. Ariens’ Professional products are available as EFI, which eliminates the need for a carburetor. A gummed-up carburetor is often the cause of a machine not starting, so this EFI technology supposedly makes it easier to start. The Professional Series machines blow snow up to 60 feet and clears 79-102 tons of snow per hour.
There are six Professional snow blowers made by Ariens: the Professional 28, the Professional 28 Hydro RapidTrak, the 28 Hydro EFI, the 32 Hydro RapidTrak, the Professional 32, and the Professional 36 Hydro EFI.
Platinum
The Ariens Platinum Series is for the residential user who wants hard-working comfort. The machines in the Platinum series have heated handgrips. They also have a super high output impeller, auto-turn steering, and premium engine options. The machines in the Platinum series clear between 73 and 83 tons of snow per hour and blow the snow up to 55 feet away. Are you interested in the new EFI technology? The Platinum series has a machine with this capability.
Choose between the Platinum 24 SHO, Platinum 28 SHO RapdiTrak, Platinum 24 SHO EFI, Platinum SHO Track 28, and the Platinum 30 SHO.
Deluxe
Arens’ Deluxe series offers a large impeller and auto-turn steering technology. The 21-inch tall housing is maneuvered through the snow on large tires. Clear between 62 and 72 tons of snow per hour. Customers can choose between 24 and 30-inch clearing widths, and they can also decide whether or not to purchase a machine with EFI technology.
The Deluxe models include Deluxe 24, Deluxe 28, Deluxe 28 SHO, Deluxe 30, and the Deluxe 30 EFI.
Compact
Not everyone has a huge storage building to house his toys. Some of us have to fit all of our lawn equipment in a garage. Because of this, Ariens offers Compact versions of their models. These models are light-weight and easy to handle, but they are durable. The housing is 20 inches high, and an 11-inch auger diameter digs through the snow, enabling you to clear between 5 and 59 feet. Choose between 20 and 24-inch clearing widths. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
The Compact models include Compact 20, Compact 24, and Compact Track 24.
Path Pro
The Path Pro Series offers machines with a single-stage motor. Don’t worry though. These machines clear up to nine inches of snow. These affordable snow blowers feature a clearing width of 21 inches and can blow snow up to 35 feet. Instead of having an auger, they work with 8.375-inch paddles to clear a path through the snow. Some of the snow blowers in the Path Pro series can be purchased with an electric start.
There are four Path Pro models in the series. Choose from the Path Pro 136 Electric Start, Path Pro 208 Recoil, Path Pro 308 Electric Start, and the Path Pro 208 Electric Start with Remote Chute.
Professional 21
Professional snowblowers need professional equipment. Ariens designed this series of snow blowers for those who need to transport their machines to different locations. Both models in this series are 21 inches wide. Choose from Professional 21 SSR or Professional 21 SSRC.
Track
Track snow blowers are made to be used on steep, hilly, icy, and slippery terrain. The models in this series feature six different forward speeds and two reverse speeds. Choose between the Compact Track 24 and the Platinum SHO Track 28.
Power Brush
While there are specific accessories marketed for each model, users can also purchase a Power Brush that will make your driveway shine. The Power Brush is a stand-alone unit. This brush clears all the muck that is left as the result of a northern winter. Get rid of the slush, sleet, and snow, as well as leaves and sand as the 28 or 36-inch brush head clears the path. The Power Brush pivots 40 degrees, which will enable you to clear in tight spaces. Adjust the level of your brush easily. The Power Brush features heated hand grips, large tires, and triggerless steering. Choose among the Power Brush 28, Power Brush 36, and Hydro Brush 36.

The history of the Ariens Company
1930s-1950s
The Ariens Company started in 1933 with four employees. The founder was Henry Ariens, who designed a gas-powered roto-tiller in his garage in Brillion, Wisconsin. In 1945, that same Mr. Ariens received an Army Ordnance Award for his designs of a mobile mortar case. In 1956, Henry’s son, Steve, became the president of the company. Two years later, the company entered the lawn and garden market and introduced the company’s first riding mower.
1960s
Two years later, in 1960, Ariens introduced the first two-stage snow blower. In 1963, the growing company built a 23,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Wisconsin. Henry’s grandson, Michael Ariens, became president of the company in 1969.
1970s
A new metal fabrication area was added to the Ariens’ facilities in 1977.
1990s
In 1998, Henry Ariens’ great-grandson became the president of the company. The company’s 70th Anniversary was celebrated in 2003 with the opening of the Ariens’ Museum.
2000s
In 2003, the company began manufacturing their first zero-turn-radius mowers. The Ariens’ Technology and Engineering Center opened in 2007. In 2010, the company developed its first two-stage, electric snow blower. The company apparently has done well with their line of snow blowers as the three-millionths Sno Throw machine came off the assembly line in 2012. The new Design and Development Center opened in 2017. This 45,000 square foot facility was built in Wisconsin. Currently, the company employs over 1,500 people in the U.S., U.K., and Norway.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Ariens Mowers
Ariens also is known for their mowing equipment as well. Their zero-degree turning mowers cut mowing time in half and allowed users to maneuver through tight spots easier than ever before. The zero-turn mower series includes the Apex, Ikon XL, Ikon X, and Zoom.
Ariens also makes a series of walk-behind mowers. These include the Razor and Walk-Behind.
To find the right Ariens’ mower for your situation, answer the series of questions from this here.
Ariens Log Splitter
Ariens also makes a Log Splitter that is easy to use. Their splitter cuts logs horizontally and vertically.
Ariens’ does a lot for their local community. In 2007 the Ariens Foundation partnered with their local school district to support STEM classes. The Foundation not only focused on the classroom needs of high schoolers, but they also worked to bring real-world project-based learning to the grade schoolers in the district as well. Not only did the local children benefit from these programs, but the community did as well. Many of these students, inspired to study science and engineering in grade school, continued their education and then returned to work at the local Ariens Company. How does a snow blower work?
Perhaps you are interested in purchasing a snow blower, but you have no idea what features to look for while shopping. If this is the case, knowing how a snow blower works would be helpful.
Snow blowers are pushed through ice and snow. As it dislodges the snow, the machine discharges it through a chute. Snow blowers are used to clear sidewalks, driveways, stairs, porches, and decks.
Large snow blowers have a gas-powered engine that runs the machine. Smaller snow blowers have an electric motor. Sometimes snow blowers are battery powered or use an electrical cord that plugs into an outlet.
Most snow blowers have an auger. Those who grew up in a rural area may be familiar with this type of simple machinery. For those who are new to the term, an auger is a set of rotating blades that are placed at the front of a snow blower. The most common design for the blades is a helix, but augers run like a corkscrew. Auger blades are made out of a variety of materials, but they are usually plastic, steel, or aluminum. Augers help chop through the heavy ice and snow that needs to be removed in the process of using a snow blower.
As you look at the specifications of different snow blowers, you will notice that augers come in a variety of lengths and diameters. Longer augers will clean a wider path. If you are able to clean a wider path, you can cut down on the amount of time you are outside pushing through the snow. The diameter of the auger determines the cutting depth, but keep in mind that the entire auger is not driven through the snowdrifts. Part of the auger is attached to the snow blower machine. A 14-inch auger may only cut seven inches at a time. This varies from model to model.
As the augers cut through snow and ice, they shred the frozen particles into smaller chunks. The smaller pieces move through a chute, and then they are blown away from the machine and its user, usually throwing the snow between ten and 50 feet.
Single-stage snow blowers work rather simply. The auger lifts the snow, breaks up the chunks, and then throws the frozen particles through a chute and away from the machine. Usually, single-stage snow blowers can be used with light or medium snow. Single-stage snow blowers can be powered with an electric motor, but some of these snow blowers to have more powerful gas engines.
Single-stage snow blowers should only be used on paved areas. Since the augers of single-stage snow blowers make contact with the ground, it would not be safe to use such a machine on a rocky surface. In the process of cleaning your driveway, you don’t want to throw rocks or gravel as you are removing snow and ice.
Two-stage snow blowers are a little more complicated. The process starts the same as a single-stage snow blower, but after the auger lifts the snow and breaks it up, a two-stage blower has an impeller that blows the snow out of the chute and away from the user.
Two-stage snow blowers remove more snow than their simpler counterpart. The augers are generally wider, and two-stage snow blowers can blow the snow farther away than the other machines. One disadvantage of a two-stage blower is that it doesn’t scrape the ground as closely as a single-stage blower. Most blowers have an additional skid shoe that scrapes the ground as the user moves across it. Because of this design, two-stage snow blowers can be used on rocky surfaces.
Most of the time, two-stage blowers run with a gas mower. Since the machine pushes more snow at a time, it needs a heavy-duty engine to keep the machine running. Check to see if the product you are looking at is self-propelled. You also might check to make sure the wheels can be moved forward or backward. Check to see if the machine can be used at variable speeds.
There are also three-stage snow blowers on the market. There are two augers built into those machines. The two augers work to lift the snow. They then move the snow to the center of the machine, and then the induction accelerator breaks it up and feeds it into an impeller. The impeller blows the snow away from the user. Three-stage snow blowers are capable of moving a lot more snow than the one and two-stage machines.
Even with all this information about how snow blowers work, you may still be wondering which machine is right for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself.
What questions do you need to answer in choosing a snow blower?
How often does it snow in your area? How big of an area do you need to clean each time it snows? What type of space will you be cleaning? Is it paved or is it covered with gravel? How sloped is the area? How much do you want to spend?

Do you really need a snowblower?
Perhaps you have completed your research, and you now understand how a snow blower works and what features to look for when picking out the right product for your home. Now the question is, does it snow enough where you live to use one?
What are the snowiest cities in America?
Here is a list of some of the snowiest cities in America. You may be surprised to find your city on the list.
Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany (New York)
Three New York cities are in the top 20 of snowiest cities in the USA. None of the boroughs of New York City made it on the list.
Flagstaff, Arizona
Surprisingly, this Arizona city receives over one hundred inches of snow each year.
Erie, Pennsylvania
With an average high in January at 33.7 degrees, it is not a surprise that the residents of Erie enjoy over 100 inches of snow per year.
Boulder, Colorado
Even though the average temperature in January is a balmy 46.9 degrees, Boulder residents still have over 85 inches of snow every winter.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
You can’t have a list of snowy areas without including a city in Michigan on the list. Grand Rapids has on average 74.9 inches of snow.
Cleveland, Ohio
Visitors to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland may need to wear their snow boots during their visit. The average snowfall in that city is 68.1 inches.
South Bend, Indiana
Rounding up the top ten list of snowiest cities is South Bend.
Where are all the Alaskan cities? The compiled list only includes cities with over 50,000 residents.
Snowblower safety
Snow blowers can be dangerous. Any limb that is caught in the auger of a snow blower can be seriously injured. Make sure that all the shields that came with the equipment are in place when you use the machine.
Be aware that a snow blower doesn’t just send clumps of snow and ice up to fifty feet away. Other items can be caught up within the snow blower and can be discharged at a fast rate. If your area is expecting snow, make sure you clean the area before the snow arrives.
Be careful of where you are running the snow blower. Most snow blowers run with a gasoline engine. These engines produce toxic fumes that can be fatal, and the fuel can cause a fire hazard.
Children are attracted to large machinery. Make sure your child is mature enough physically and mentally to use a snow blower. Errors in judgment while using a snow blower can result in serious injuries.
Just like any heavy piece of equipment, snow blowers need to be maintained well so they can run safely and efficiently. If you do not consider yourself handy, consider visiting a local Ariens dealer at the beginning of every snow season to make sure your snow blower will be ready to go when Jack Frost visits your community.
